How Acai Bowls Got Trendy

As health and wellness has become trendy in recent years, many different healthy food or drink options have also become trendy. Matcha, chia seeds, and Greek yogurt are among some of the foods that have gained popularity. Superfoods such as fish, dark leafy greens, quinoa, and avocado have also become increasingly popular. You may have also heard of acai, the dark, purple berry put into bowls along with other fruit, nuts or nut butters, and various toppings. Acai has been growing for thousands of years in the Amazon rainforest located in Brazil, but the fruit was not introduced to America until around the year 2000 and eventually made its way across the globe.

Acai bowls may be well known amongst various groups of people nowadays, but for the longest time only Brazilian families ate them. Acai actually has an interesting tie to Jiu Jitsu, a type of martial arts. A brief history is described in a blog post on vidaboaacai.com, titled “How Acai Became Known Worldwide Through Jiu Jitsu.” To summarize, Japanese immigrants moved to Brazil sometime in the 1900’s and an ambassador for Brazil was sent there. This ambassador eventually taught traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu to sons of a Brazilian friend and they created Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Acai was regularly consumed by Jiu Jitsu athletes and was also available on beaches. Two American surfers traveling to Brazil tried acai and liked it so much that they wanted to bring it back to Los Angeles. It took a while to figure out a way to transport acai, but eventually they made it happen and the two surfers started the company, Sambazon.

As more people learn about the benefits of consuming acai, the demand for it increases. One benefit is that acai supposedly helps to support cardiovascular health. There is also increasing demand for acai in the cosmetic industry since it can be used as an ingredient in natural beauty products. As far as the growth for acai, one source stated, “Acai Berry Market size was worth USD 1.1 billion in 2023 and it is estimated to reach USD 1.96 billion by 2028 with a CAGR of 12.2%” (Market Data Forecast, 2023).

Acai was just a part of the diet for Brazilians for years and years, but now it is a trendy health snack or breakfast that can be consumed worldwide. If you are in the mood for something sweet that is still relatively healthy, try an acai bowl.

Hi Mallory! I loved reading your analysis of how acai bowls became so popular. It’s fascinating how a simple dish from the Amazon rainforest has now become a global food trend. I think one reason for this is the growing interest in healthy eating and superfoods!

It’s great that there is a growing interest in health and wellness! And I like how we can easily walk to the Orange Circle and grab an acai bowl because it’s better than grabbing something else that’ll make me feel gross.

I love açaí and enjoyed reading about the background of it! It’s definitely been a trendy food for the past few years, and the fact that it offers health benefits definitely adds to its appeal.

Yeah, I was surprised by its background! Had no idea it was linked to Jiu Jitsu until my friend who used to do the sport informed me!

I love how flavourful and filling açai bowls are! I loved reading about its origin.
