The Price of Paradise

Being a former USD Torero, I can say from experience that San Diego is a fantastic city that is easily recognizable by the perfect weather, great nightlife, amazing food, and beautiful beaches that make up San Diego county. However, all these positives do not come free of charge as San Diego has grown to be one of the most expensive cities to live in throughout the entire United States.

One of the main expenses I realized throughout my time in San Diego is the cost of housing. This expense is typically the largest expense realized by those who wish to live in the city and its surrounding areas. Although the median income in the county is significantly higher than that of the rest of the U.S, it is evident that this is necessary for individuals to be able to afford to live in SD to begin with. As indicated by SmartAsset.com, renting is often the most affordable option in San Diego, but in comparison to other cities around the U.S, as well as those in California, rental rates in SD can also reach upwards of $4,000 each month. However, as mentioned above, one also must realize that in searching for housing in SD, one also has to incur the costs of location, and the positives that come from living in this city.

Public transportation is also not the best in San Diego, so travel and transportation costs can grow to be incredibly significant. Since cars are the preferred vehicle for transportation in SD, the cost of owning and maintaining a vehicle must be considered when choosing to live in the sprawling city like San Diego. Therefore, like the impact of lifestyle on housing prices, this aspect also comes to play with transportation as an individual is subject to either having a car or lacking an alternate method of reliable transportation.

SmartAsset also indicates that Healthcare costs in San Diego are significantly higher than that of the national average. This is not only directly correlated with the cost of living, but also because San Diego is home to very well-known and respected hospitals. The high cost of Healthcare is supported by the residents of San Diego as they typically have a higher income than the national average, but for those looking to move to San Diego with less than the average income in SD, it will be very difficult to afford things like healthcare and transportation.

Even though this post specifically highlights the impact of inflated costs of living in San Diego, it does not take away from the benefits that come from living in such a great place. Even though the city has much to offer, it is still important to remember that residents pay more than just the house, but they pay for the lifestyle, location, and benefits that come from living in such a great city.
