Everyone is incredibly familiar with Victoria’s Secret’s annual fashion show! Don’t you remember the days when you and your friends would make a whole pajama party out of it? Slipper and popcorn and all? Well that dream died in 2019 when Victoria Secret decided to permanently end its annual fashion show due it its outdated views of women and the #metoo movement. Since then, Victoria’s Secret has kept its head down; we haven’t heard much buzz from them as they are focusing on selling products. So what does Victoria’s Secret have to offer us now?
Currently, in place of their annual fashion show, Victoria’s Secret plans on releasing a film called “Victoria’s Secret World Tour” and it will be a live-streamed event. Victoria’s Secret is involving other countries such as Columbia, Nigeria, England, and Japan to showcase their cultures alongside VS’s latest collection. This once-controversial brand is so ready to makes its comeback. They are completely taking a whole new direction with this campaign to show its customers and ex-fans that they have evolved. “This film is the ultimate expression of the Victoria’s Secret brand transformation,” says Head Creative Director Raúl Martinez.
“Victoria’s Secret World Tour” is a full-length movie that will take place worldwide. Instead of only focusing on the models and extravagant lingerie, the film will also showcase a behind-the-scenes look on what it takes to run such a large production. Viewers will see interviews with costume designers, stylists, producers, and more! Essentially, it is an overview meant to display the hard work that goes into producing one of the most glamorous events of the year. Whoever has missed the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, here is your chance to get up close and personal, more than ever before! So maybe pajama parties are about to make a comeback for one day a year?
This different approach to their usual fashion shows will display more creativity and inclusivity and hopefully bring VS back on the map. They still hold the largest market share for undergarments and lingerie, but their reputation took a huge hit in 2019 and VS chose to retreat and regroup. In the 2010s, Victoria’s Secret received a lot of criticism for shaping unattainable beauty standards. Hopefully, “it will be driven by fashion, glamour and entertainment with a nod to beloved iconography from the past but in a bold, redefined way,” states Martinez. Well, I know I’ll be watching! It seems that they have come a long way from only showcasing certain body types, skin tones, and gender identities. Cheers to inclusivity!
