Walmart + Celebrates Mother’s Day By Giving Away 20,000 Memberships

This year for Mother’s Day, Walmart plans on giving away 20,000 Walmart + memberships to new moms. Walmart is partnering with the Pampers hospital gift bag program to offer this promotion. From the beginning of May, women who have recently delivered a baby will receive a reusable fabric bag, a sample pack of Pampers wipes and a one-year subscription to Walmart + for as long as the supplies last. As part of the promotion, Walmart is also highlighting mom-hacks from celebrity moms such as Cardi B, Janelle James, Jenny Slate, and Stephanie Beatriz. Executive vice president Seth Dallaire hopes that this Mother’s Day promotion benefits new moms and helps them save precious time during the first few busy years of motherhood as well as money and energy.

Currently the Walmart + annual membership fee is $98 which includes benefits such as free shipping on eligible items, free delivery from certain stores, fuel discounts, mobile scan & go features, rewards, free returns picked up from home and access to the Paramount+ streaming service. Walmart + members also get access to early product releases, special online discounts and exciting limited-time offers on services. Walmart initially launched its Walmart +  membership in 2020 and gained a lot of traction, by October of 2020, Walmart +  had between 11 million to 11.5 million members, which is around 25% of the company’s online shoppers. Although Walmart does not share exact numbers, executives state that membership to Walmart +  is on a steady increase.

This isn’t Walmart’s first promotion for Walmart + , as last holiday season, Walmart reduced the annual Walmart +  membership fee to $49 for a three-day holiday promotion and also offered free Walmart +  memberships to its employees last March.  Although this Mother’s Day promotion brings some good news, Walmart has been facing some bad news as well. Recently they announced that they will be shutting down 10 stores across the country this year due to financial constraints. This news comes after several stores being shut down in 2019, and around 150 stores being shut down few years prior to that. Walmart has been in more hot water recently, as they have been sued by consumers and retailers in three proposed class action suits accusing them of conspiring to raise the prices of disposable batteries. Last week, Energizer Holdings Inc agreed under pressure from Walmart to increase wholesale disposable battery prices, and consumers were very quick to notice this gross inflation and have spoken out completely disagreeing with the decision.

This is so cool! I love this concept because this seems like this will truly help new moms. Also, with Walmart supporting new moms, brand loyalty could increase!

For all of the issues that Walmart is know for, it is really great fo them to do be doing something like this. Walmart has always been known as the low cost leader and in just about every community, so the idea that new mothers are getting this can be very helpful for them and their community.
